Wall / Ceiling Finishes

Ceilings play an central role in shaping interior space. The ceiling material can be attached to the structural frame or can be suspended from it.

A single slope or shed form may lead the eye up towards the ridge or down towards the eave line, depending on the position of the day lighting sources within the room.

Gabled ceilings expand space upwards to the ridge line. Depending on the direction of any exposed structural elements, the gabled form may direct our notice to the height of the ridge or to its length.

A pyramid ceiling directs the eye upwards to its peak, a focus that can be accentuated with an illuminating skylight.

A vaulted ceiling directs our eyes upwards and along its length. A dome is a centralized form that enlarges space upwards and focuses our attention on the space beneath its center.

Freeform ceilings contrast with the planar quality of walls and floors and therefore attract our attention.

As a functional element, a ceiling influences the illumination of space, its acoustical quality and the amount of energy required to heat or cool a space.

The height and surface traits of a ceiling influence the level of light within a space. Fixtures mounted on a high ceiling must cast their light at a greater distance to achieve the same level of illumination as fewer fixtures suspended from the ceiling.

The smooth, hard surfaces of most ceiling materials reflect airborne sound within a space. In offices, stores and restaurants, where additional sound absorbing surfaces may be required, to reduce the reflection employed.

Ceiling is one of the key aspects to be considered in the interior design of your house. Some of the ceiling designs which can enhance the beauty of a home are:-

  • Vaulted Ceiling Design there may be many variations in the shapes of these ceilings like arched, domed and barrel, which are the commonly used ceilings in many homes.
  • Drop Ceiling Design Drop ceiling is mostly used in a modern house. This type of ceiling is lower in height as compared to other ceilings but it can give smaller size to your home. They are also used to give the room a very modern, elegant and cozy look
  • Tray Ceiling Design It is exclusively used for high ceilings. In this type, there are molds which are used in the borders to make the ceiling look rich and graceful, with a lovely chandelier hanging from the center.
  • Cathedral Ceiling Design This type of ceiling design is normally used in high ceiling and large rooms. It makes your rooms look even bigger and more spacious.

Wall Tiles

Walls provide security and privacy for the interior spaces they enclose. Walls can be classified into two types:

  • Load bearing walls: they describe the size, shape and layout of the interior spaces. As structural parts, these walls must be laid out in a pattern that is coordinated with the span of the floor and roof structures that they support.
  • Non load bearing walls: They are used in commercial and multi storeyed buildings where elasticity in the layout of the spaces is a major factor. In such cases, the loads are taken up by the column beam structural systems.

Steady, precise, symmetrical walls convey a sense of formality, one which can be noticeably enhanced with the use of smooth textures. Uneven shaped walls on the other hand are more dynamic. When combined with a rough texture, they can impart an informal character to a space.

When walls are even and neutral in color, they serve as passive backdrops for foreground elements. When irregular in shape or given texture, pattern or a vigorous color, the walls become more active and compete for our attention.

The following are the most important types of wall materials and finishes and their general characteristics.

  • Wood paneling Paneling can be made from either solid or veneered wood.
  • Plastergypsum board It is composed of a lath or base material installed over a support system or substrate, and between two and three coats of plaster.
  • Paint It is normally required for three surfaces. They are walls, metals and wooden surfaces. Wall surfaces chip and crack, metals rust and corrode and wooden surfaces get warped and scratched. Painting is necessary to increase the beauty, strength and longevity.
  • Stone-wall panels The major consideration when using stone wall panels is the weight and size that must be supported by the attachment of the material to the wall.
  • Acoustic panels Core materials can be combined in a panel to achieve the required performance. Common panel core materials are polyester bating, fiberglass blanket, fiberglass board, mineral fiberboard and particleboard.
  • Upholstered wall systems also referred to as stretched fabric wall systems combine the luxuriousness of textile wallcoverings and the practicability of a tackable or acoustically absorptive wall surface.
  • Wall coverings offer improved durability over paint finished while providing texture and pattern to the wall surface. Wallcovering types include vinyl, textile, wallpapers, fiberglass and wood venner.
